Stand Up Paddle Boards are divided into two main build types, which are inflatable and hard boards. Inflatable Paddle boards are convenient for storage and lower price, however, they may not be as durable as a hard board or as efficient in the water. Not all inflatable paddle boards are the same quality, so blow out pricing and manufacturing standards are a major issue with these boards. Hard boards may require a roof rack for your vehicle and proper storage, however, these boards are longer lifespan and high standard of manufacturing.
The main paddle board shapes are recreational, All Round, Touring and Performance shapes. The all round shape is the widest shape with the round nose and stern, which are the most stable boards when not the boards are moving slowly, floating or drifting. These boards are great for multi use paddling, including Yoga, Fishing and recreational paddling.
Touring Boards are generally more narrow, with a pointed narrow nose that cuts through the water and reduces drag on the paddle board. These boards are more stable in motion than all round paddle boards, since the wake the board creates balances and centres the paddler. There is a value in increasing performance when paddling longer distances.
The performance category are a narrow design with a canoe or pointed bow and a drop deck construction. These boards are used for coastal paddling, wake surfing, surfing, athletics or racing or long distance travelling. These boards are generally composite constructed with carbon fibre, kevlar and other advanced materials to make the boards ultra light, durable and smooth surface for the most efficient paddle board.
