Spray decks and covers are used to keep water or weather from entering the kayak or canoe during its use. The Spray decks, also called spray skirts, are an extremely useful feature because they will keep the paddler warmer during longer trips, and guarantee comfort in changing weather, rain, cold water or windy conditions.
The spray decks are held onto the deck of the kayak or canoe over the coaming (cockpit opening flange) with shock cord. This makes a seal to keep water and wind from entering the cockpit but is not so tight that the paddler cannot easily exit the cockpit in a rescue situation.
Skirts and decks are offered in neoprene and nylon materials, where neoprene will absorb water but stay more insulated and warm and nylon will water shed but has less insulation factor. Neoprene is used in wet suits to keep the user warm in very cold submerged conditions, nylon is used most commonly in tent and awnings to be water proof and shed the water off the surface.
Spray decks for the Advanced Elements inflatables and canoes are most often nylon, and cover the opening above the gunwales to stop any water from entering the boat.
