These specialty composites are cloths and fabrics used in the building and manufacturing of composite products. Specialty Cloths include Kevlar Felt, Woven Kelvar, Carbon Fibre, Carbon Fibre Kevlar Blends, Carbon Tow or Chopped Carbon and Carbon Tube or Tape. These materials are combined with Epoxy resin or other adhesives to make highly durable and ultra light parts. These materials can also be used in the fibreglassing process to greatly strengthen natural (plywoods) or sythetic (Foam, FRP, Metton, Composite board, etc.) for ultra light, heat resistant, flexible or rigid projects and products.
These raw materials are combined with Epoxy, Polyester, Vinylester and Acrylic Adhesives for structural repairs and manufacturing processes including vacuum bagging and infusion resins. These fabrics can be saturated with epoxy resin to solidify them in complex and basic shapes, but these fabrics may have certain limitations when doing complex curves and sharp edges.
It is important to note that Specialty cloths are used in multi layer laminations to create multiple directions of strength depending on the requirement of the part. Each cloth has specific purposes and must be combined in multiple layers in different directions, biaxial, unilateral and triaxial lamination for ideal strength. One layer of a specialty cloth is not a replacement for multiple layers of fiberglass or woven cloth. These cloths should be tested for your specific application to meet the durability and strength of your project.
