These marine paints and varnishes are specifically made for outdoor above and below the waterline for boats and outdoor applications. The paints are categorized as above the water line and below the waterline, which will dictate their durability and hardness when submerged temporarily or permanently. The above the waterline paints are epoxy based, enamel or polyurethane.
The varnishes are high build and low build varnishes, which serve different purposes. High build varnishes are the most durable and most impact resistant. Other marine varnishes may contain more solvents and thinners which will penetrate porous materials and begin to build a water resistant layer. The solvents off gas and you are left with thinner layers when comparing to high build varnishes.
Below the waterline paints have additives and formulated chemicals to resist build up, corrosion, algae and barnacles. These paints are offered for salt water and fresh water environments, however they are ablative which makes them shed material to reduce the potential for algae and corrosion to occur.
