MEKP is the catalyst for Polyester, Vinylester and Gel Coats. MEKP is added to the resin in ratio to force the resin to cure depending on how catalyst is added the cure time and strength will be affected. MEKP should be handled with proper PPE including a organics cartridge mask, gloves and eye protection.
Air Dry is a paraffin wax suspended in styrene. Air Dry is added to unwaxed resins and gel coats to create a wax skin on the resin which will allow it to cure hard. Unwaxed resins and gel coats will remain tacky if air dry is not added, but this tacky surface does not require sanding before another layer of fiberglass can be applied.
Air dry is added to an unwaxed resin at 2.5% v/v. MEKP is added to every batch 1% v/v.
MEKP must be added to every batch of resin, but the air dry is required on the final layer to force all the layers to cure to a hard surface.
Acetone is used for cleaning uncured resins and fiberglass tools. Acetone is used as a dewaxing solvent during the fiberglassing application. All Waxed polyester resin and Gel Coats need to be sanded and solvent wiped with acetone before more layers can be added.
