The Solace EX kayaks are high performance touring kayaks that are high carry capacity ocean and rapids capable. These kayaks are extremely durable and have enough volume for long trips and long distance travel. The "EX" designation represents "extreme," and our designed Don Moore took the time to refine the shape, hull panels, deck contours, sealed bulkheads and waterline for a highly efficient, stable and ultra light kayak. The Solace 16 EX is 36 pounds at 16 feet long, which makes it easy to transport, winter store and carry/portage on shore.
The differences when comparing a 16, 17 and 18 foot kayak are minor other than some of the volume, carry capacity and efficiency metrics. A 17 or 18 foot kayak will have larger bow and stern hatches, which will accommodate more equipment and gear. The shape of the bow and stern are also going to be longer, which makes for a gentle transition in the hull shape and deck shape. This will increase performance and efficiency because the hull has smooth transitions and shapes instead of abrupt sharp edges. The more volume the kayak has the more gear it can carry. This will always be a limitation for smaller kayaks in touring applications that longer kayaks do not have.
You will not be limited by the performance of this kayak, because it does well in slow moving water, recreational paddling, fishing, touring as well as full length touring, ocean and class 3 rapids. This kayak is also able to be paddled in shallow water and recreational uses because it is stable and reliable. The hull and deck are fibreglassed internally and externally, and there is a graphite in epoxy coating on the hull below the water line. This makes the hull robust and impact resistant and reduces the maintenance on the kayak. The kayak has a "v" shaped bow and stern which easily cut through windy and wavy conditions, and also provide traction (straight line paddling) with ease. Rudders and Skeg are not required for our Solace kayaks, however, they may be beneficial if the kayak is going to be built for coastal paddling.
The kayaks require next to no maintenance. Soap and water at the end of the season and a covered outdoor storage (which is the same for any kayak). The varnish will age, and can be recoated every 7 to 10 years, and the deck lines and seals can be replaced every 7- 10 years.
The cockpit in the "EX" models accommodates a paddler up to 6'4" and 225+ pounds. We offer many cockpit opening sizes and since the boat is custom built, we can adjust bulkheads and seat positions for large and tall paddlers.
