Marine Varnish is formulated and tested to be superior and long lasting in the marine environment. Certain high build varnishes are more durable when submerged underwater without softening, as compared to other marine varnishes. Marine varnishes are intended to be a UV stable surface when applied to fiberglass or raw woods, however, varnishes are not a water proofing material. Marine varnish can be applied over epoxy or other resins that will be a water proof barrier with a UV stable coating.
Most Marine Varnishes are considered ZSPAR varnishes. These high build and traditional varnishes are made for high humidity, submerged, and large temperature variations. Interior stains and finishes are not intended to be outdoor or submerged and will have a short lifespan.
Marine varnish can be applied with two techniques, such as a foam roller or HVLP sprayer. In certain applications to raw or natural woods thinners and solvents may be required for the best result. Always follow the recommended thinners and solvents written on the can, not all solvents like turpentine, paint thinner and varsol are suitable to be mixed with the varnish.
